The Company That You Keep – How Do the People Around You Affect Your Health?

“Surround yourself with only people who are going to lift you higher. Life is already filled with those who want to bring you down.”

Oprah Winfrey

Have you ever been with a person, and after walking away you exclaim to yourself, “I feel like that encounter sucked the life right out of me.” The drain you experience is usually due to that person’s negative attitude or behaviors that leave you feeling exhausted, unhappy and drained after being with them. This type of person can wreak havoc on your life if you allow it to.

Negative people typically have similar characteristics such as poor boundaries, drama-seeker behaviors, overly critical attitudes, chronic complaining, arguing, demanding, negativity, and blame-shifting, People who exhibit these types of characteristics usually would love nothing more than to have a partner in their misery and would you to see if you’d like to join in the negativity.

Resist the urge to join in on these negative relationships. Negativity in your life not only affects your emotions, but it can also cause stress and strain on your heart. There is an undeniable link between your mental and physical health. Being in control of your emotions allows you to be more in control of your behaviors and choices. Did you know that negative emotions could suppress your immune system, increase your stress levels, cause your heart to beat faster, and your blood pressure to rise? All of these factors have an adverse effect on your healthy heart.

I would like to encourage all of my patients to choose to fuel their lives with people with “good fruit” for their lives, emotions and heart. Fuel your heart with people who breathe life, positivity and joy into yours, and you will do the same for the min return.

“Keep your face to the sunshine and you cannot see the shadow.”
