Managing Our Time or Our Energy — What Shall We Do?

We are working so hard all day long — but it’s never enough. We just aren’t able to grasp the concept of time and lose all our energy in vain.

There’s a point when we just get fed up with the feeling of being depleted and wonder what we should do to manage our time properly. So we do a quick online search on “How to manage our time?” and it recommends us a list of apps and time management tools to optimize our day in a better way. We give these apps a try and expect our time to manage itself with the click of some buttons. However, we still see the problem to persist: We are yet always short on time and low on energy.

Now the Question is: Why?

Why do we always fall short on time?
Why do we never possess enough energy to go through the day cheerfully?
Why do we fail at managing our time and energy properly?

Because while we are completely aware of the fact that time is a finite resource; we often neglect the truth that it also resets itself — every 24 hours.
Hence, it is not our time that we need to control, but our energy with the time given. That is what matters.

Whether we make use of it or not, time simply does and will continue to exist. Energy, on the other hand, is utilized on a completely different basis.

Energy is also finite, but it is not readily available at all times. It needs to be renewed every day. Unlike time, energy is a resource that withers and depletes as the day passes.

So, why do we try to manage our time instead of our energy — being that is what we can actually control?

We can manage and schedule our time, but at the end of the day if we do not have the energy to follow our set schedule — all our efforts could go into vain.

It is not time management that gets your work done, but rather the right energy management that boosts your productivity.

Think about it!

If you’re physically tired because you slept late last night, you won’t have enough energy to work today. And there is no doubt that lack of sleep translates to low productivity and weak performance.

Or say your mind is consumed by worries about whether your new project is going to succeed. This will lead your mental energy to take a dip and you will lack the capacity to focus on the task at hand.

Or maybe one of your coworkers has constantly been repeating a mistake and it’s frustrating you out. This will take a toll on your emotional energy and harm your productivity.

Hence, it is important to manage your energy to maintain your productivity.

What Can We Do to Manage Our Energy?

Here’s how you can manage your energy and keep track of your time at once:

Be Aware Of the Time Brackets:
Even though everyone has the same 24 hours, not everyone has the same energy levels throughout the day. Some may feel energetic in the morning, some during night. So, be aware of your time and your body clock and plan your day accordingly.

Learn to Say ‘No’:
It is very important to have the authority and willpower to say ‘No’ to someone. Let it be your family, friends, or coworkers; unless there is an urgency, don’t tire yourself of anything unnecessary.

Use a Timer — If Necessary:
It is a world of distractions and our mind always wanders. So, put a timer on your tasks so that you could concentrate more and accomplish your tasks in the designated time.
